Writing

“If you can’t explain something simply, you don’t understand it well.”

Albert Einstein

“The finest language is mostly made up of simple unimposing words.”

George Eliot

“Easy reading is damned hard writing.”

Nathaniel Hawthorne

Organisations write long and short, complex and simple, internal and public documents. All need to be true, clear, sensibly concise and courteous to work well. When staff lack the time, experience or detachment to write effectively, the results can create problems for years.

Business communication is our only work. We belong to several related groups such as Clarity and 26 and spend our days teaching and practising good writing.

Past projects include a handbook for a children’s hospice, a detailed and legally sensitive reply to a complex complaint, HR policies for a national charity and rewriting most of a 200 page handbook for a green charity.

We work to four main principles: the point of the document, the writer’s and reader’s needs, legal and other sensitivities, and clear, crafted expression. The result is businesslike, often elegant writing that helps organisations achieve high standards in all their work.
